Selections for this honor are based upon recommendations of the Academic Senate committee which follows the procedure of soliciting nominations from students and alumni. Evaluations and recommendations of the nominees are based upon an in-depth review by the committee, including classroom visitations. Outstanding Professor

Montgomery ‘Monty’ Van Wart, Professor of Public Administration

Monty Van Wart

Montgomery “Monty” Van Wart, professor of public administration at Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, was awarded the 2022-23 Outstanding Professor Award by President Tomás D. Morales in recognition of his excellence in teaching, research and service.

Van Wart holds a B.A. from Franklin and Marshall College, an M.S. in teaching from Lewis and Clark College, and a Ph.D. in public administration from Arizona State University. His leadership roles include chairing two different departments, serving as interim dean, and being appointed CSUSB Faculty Research Fellow. He has been an advocate for high-quality online teaching and a catalyst for supporting a greater research climate at CSUSB. He was the first faculty member at CSUSB to have a course certified by Quality Matters and Quality Learning and Teaching.

Van Wart’s scholarly contributions include over 150 publications, 11 authored books, more than 8,000 citations, and a Google Scholar H-index of 33. He actively promotes a research-oriented environment at CSUSB, collaborating across departments and supporting fellow faculty members.

Van Wart’s professional association memberships include The American Society for Public Administration and the International Research Society for Public Management.

Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence

Stuart Sumida, Professor of Biology 

Stuart Sumida

Stuart Sumida, a professor of biology, was awarded Cal State San Bernardino’s 2022-23 Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence. With a background in biology specializing in vertebrate paleontology and morphology, Sumida earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Before joining CSUSB in 1992, he served as the director of Human Anatomy Laboratories at the University of Chicago.

Throughout his tenure, Sumida has taught more than 15 undergraduate and graduate courses in biology and kinesiology, consistently receiving high Student Evaluations of Teaching Effectiveness (SOTE) scores. In 2022, he was honored with the College of Natural Science’s Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching and Instruction.

His contributions extend beyond academia; Sumida is internationally recognized for his expertise in teaching anatomy to animators. He has contributed to numerous films, academic conferences, and scientific associations. He has been elected as the vice president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, becoming the first CSUSB faculty member in this role. He is set to assume the presidency in November 2024.

Sumida’s research background includes being a research associate at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Field Museum of Natural History. He has authored three books, written more than 70 journal articles, and actively involves students in research and publishing in refereed journals.

Outstanding Service Award

Jeremy Murray, Assistant Professor of History

Jeremy Murray

Jeremy Murray, assistant professor of history, was recognized for his commitment to student success and community engagement as the recipient of CSUSB’s 2022-23 Outstanding Service Award from President Tomás D. Morales.

During his tenure, Murray has initiated impactful programs such as the Modern China Lecture Series and played a pivotal role in the Conversations on Race and Policing program, demonstrating his dedication to addressing societal issues. He has published extensively on Chinese history and cultural traditions, focusing on marginalized histories and diverse methodologies. His scholarly achievements include four books and numerous articles.

Murray joined the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences in 2011. He holds a B.A. in East Asian studies from the State University of New York, Albany, an M.A. in East Asian languages and cultures from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in modern Chinese history from the University of California, San Diego. He is a 2022-24 Wilson China Fellow with the prestigious Wilson Center.

Murray serves as the graduate coordinator for the M.A. in History program, and he has been a faculty advisor for the award-winning History in the Making student journal and the nationally recognized History Club/Phi Alpha Theta honor society.

Murray has been awarded numerous honors, including CSUSB’s 2021-22 Outstanding Faculty Advisor award, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Senior Faculty Research Fellowship from 2019-21, and the Phi Alpha Theta Faculty Advisor Research Award in 2019.

Sharon Velarde, Associate Professor of Public Administration

Sharon Pierce

Sharon Velarde Pierce, associate professor of public administration, was recognized as the CSUSB 2022-23 Outstanding Faculty Advisor by President Tomás D. Morales, acknowledging her dedication to academic advising. She has been instrumental in guiding students, drawing from her own experiences as a first-generation college graduate. A three-time alumna of Cal State San Bernardino, she earned a B.A. and M.A. in public administration and an Ed.D. in educational leadership.

Aside from her advising role, Pierce is actively engaged in research, focusing on areas such as leadership, mental health, diversity, and Latinx studies in education. She has contributed to several publications and presentations in her field.

Her commitment to student success, academic research, and community involvement exemplifies her dedication to higher education and its impact on student lives. Pierce's work continues to influence and inspire the academic journey of students at CSUSB.

Outstanding Lecturer

Lacey Kendall, Communication Studies Lecturer

Lacey Kendall

Lacey Kendall, a communication studies lecturer renowned for her teaching abilities and commitment to student engagement, was awarded CSUSB’s 2022-23 Outstanding Lecturer Award by President Tomás D. Morales.

Kendall holds an A.A. in telecommunications from San Bernardino Valley Community College, a B.A. in broadcast communications from University of La Verne, and an M.A. in communication studies from CSUSB, where she graduated magna cum laude.

Kendall joined CSUSB in 2007 as a broadcast media specialist. In 2016, she transitioned to a lecturer role in the communication studies department in the College of Arts and Letters. Over the years, she has taught 17 distinct undergraduate and graduate courses at the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses. Kendall’s students praise her for her knowledge, dedication and commitment to their success.

Kendall’s contributions extend beyond teaching, playing pivotal roles in initiatives such as the “My Awesome Empire” syndicated radio program, the development of a multimedia internship training program, and the establishment of the Coyote Advertising department.
